What is Restorative Dentistry?

Restorative dentistry is designed to treat, repair or replace diseased, defective or damaged teeth. Treatments include dental implants, crowns, bridges, fillings, root canals and more. Ideally, patients can recover good dental function and a more attractive smile.

Restorative dentistry focuses on the repair or replacement of teeth that are decayed, damaged or defective. While some of these procedures are cosmetic, many are considered medically necessary for oral health. Restoration typically refers to the placement of dental prosthetics. However, it can also involve treating and preventing dental disease. This is often essential for ensuring that the restored teeth remain in good condition.

Why Choose Restorative Dentistry?

Patients who undergo dental restoration at Rockhouse Dentistry benefit by having:

  • Less tooth discomfort, pain or sensitivity
  • Proper function during biting and chewing
  • Better long-term oral health
  • A more attractive and vibrant smile

Dental problems that are left untreated tend to get worse over time. A condition that started out affecting just one tooth can end up causing problems throughout your mouth. This is why it is so important to seek restorative treatment as soon as possible. You could end up saving your healthy teeth from permanent damage!

Who is a Candidate for Restorative Dentistry?

Dental restoration is intended for patients with any of the following tooth flaws:

  • One or more missing teeth
  • Cracked or fractured teeth
  • Stained teeth that do not respond to whitening
  • Teeth that have a root canal infection
  • Teeth that are decayed
  • Teeth that are misshapen or too widely spaced
  • Enamel that is excessively worn

Patients of any age can undergo dental restoration that is appropriate for their specific dental problems. If a procedure involves oral surgery, you should be in generally good health with no serious medical issues that would increase the risk of complications. You should be aware that many dental restorations do not last a lifetime. You may need to have prosthetics such as crowns replaced one or more times throughout the years. If you are committed to taking good care of your teeth and gums, you are likely to have longer lasting results.

Restorative Dentistry Procedures

Dental restoration covers a very broad range of treatments. Here are some of the procedures our dentists perform:

Fillings: Rockhouse Dentistry uses tooth-colored fillings (made of dental resin) to restore damaged teeth.

Porcelain inlays and onlays: These restorations are designed to strengthen and repair molars. Inlays are placed in the chewing surface of the tooth. Onlays replace the chewing surface and one or more cusps (the bumps around the outer perimeter of the molar). They may extend down the side of the tooth.

Dental crowns
: Crowns repair teeth that do not have enough healthy structure left to be restored with a filling, inlay or onlay. They are also used to anchor traditional bridges, to restore teeth that have undergone a root canal and to cap dental implants.

Porcelain veneers: Tooth veneers cover up minor flaws such as chips, cracks and permanent discoloration. They can also be used to restore teeth that are misshapen, short, crooked or too widely spaced.

Dental composite bonding: This resin material is matched to the patient’s existing tooth color. It can be used to restore the original dimensions of a chipped tooth. Treatment takes only one visit.

Dental implants: These titanium implants are placed in the jawbone where they fuse with the bone during healing. They are capped with a porcelain crown to replace a lost tooth. Implants can also be used to support bridges or dentures.

Bridges: These dental prosthetics are used to replace a lost tooth. A traditional bridge is typically held in place by crowns on either side of the missing tooth.

Dentures: Dentures are created for patients with extensive tooth loss. Dentures may be full or partial and removable or fixed depending on the extent of a patient’s tooth and bone loss.

More Information about Restorative Dentistry

Dental restoration may require additional procedures to prepare your mouth for a prosthetic. This may include bone grafting, gum revision, root canal or tooth extraction. If you are getting a reconstructive smile makeover, you may need a team of dental specialists working together to fully restore the health and appearance of your teeth.
